The Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV built by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced in 1997 and redesigned for 2003 and again for 2007, it slots between the smaller Ford Explorer, and the now discontinued Ford Excursion. The Expedition offers up to nine passenger seating and a range of V8 engines. It is similar to the Lincoln Navigator, especially for 2004 with the introduction of the Limited trim line. One million Expeditions have sold since 2004, reflecting high consumer demand for its family-friendly interior, cargo space, and high towing capacity. A specially modified Special Service Vehicle version is also available from Ford for law enforcement. All Expeditions are built in Wayne, Michigan. This SUV (especially the larger EL model for 2007) is once again Ford's flagship SUV.

The Ford Explorer is a mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) sold mostly in North America built by the Ford Motor Company since 1990 and still in production as of 2006. It is manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky (it was also assembled in Hazelwood, Missouri until the plant closed on March 10, 2006). It has been the best-selling vehicle mid-size SUV in the United States each year since its introduction, and is one of the vehicles instrumental in turning the SUV from a special-interest vehicle into one of the most popular vehicle types on the road. The Explorer has also been involved in controversy, after a spate of fatal rollover accidents involving Explorers fitted with Firestone tires. Most of the time, the Explorer had competed with the Nissan Pathfinder and the Toyota 4Runner. Both two-door Explorer Sport and four-door models of Explorer have been sold. Part-time four wheel drive is an available option, and since 1995 this has been a 'shift on the fly' system with full protection against being engaged at too high a speed.

The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV manufactured by Toyota, sold mainly in the United States, Canada and Mexico and built from 1984 to the present. The original 4Runner was little more than a Toyota pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has since undergone significant independent development into a mid-size SUV. All 4Runners have been built at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Japan as well at Toyota's Hino plant.
